ACTIVISM THROUGH FASHION SOLIDARITY @ THE 75TH ANNUAL GOLDEN GLOBES

Through a sea black a unified front and a solid display of fashion was displayed at the 75th Annual Golden Globe awards.  The #metoo movement took center stage at this year’s event and the celebrity audience put the focus firmly on equality through all aspects of the evening.

The red carpet featured both women and men dressed in black as a show of solidarity to the Times Up Initiative, supporting the imbalance of power that has besieged Hollywood for decades and is so omnipresent in so many other industries.  Last night’s act of black further supported those brave women who have come to the surface of late and reported the abuse that they have under gone.

The conversation on the red carpet diverted away from the usually fashion focused small talk to topics of real importance this year. Enews was called out by several actresses including Debra Messing and Eva Longoria.  Both actresses made it a point to highlight the pay discrepancy of Cat Sandler to her male counterpart on the show.  Cat recently left her post after finding out that her counterpart was making twice her salary for the exact same job.  Needless to say pay equality is also a hot topic as women are banding together to wage war against these type of inequalities.

Also, many celebrities opted to bring activist as their dates this year, further highlighting the movement that is afoot for women.  Meryl Streep was at the top of the list bringing the Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Ai-Jen Poo, as her date for the evening.  And Kerry Washington was sure to put her red carpet interview moment to good use by chatting about the Times Up Defense Fund, which is working to help women across all industries to have resources to fight back against abuses of power.

And the night wouldn’t have been complete without mentioning the moving speech made by Oprah Winfrey as she received the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement award as the first black women.  Oprah spoke about uncovering the absolute truth and the importance of everyone speaking their truth being their most powerful tool.  She was eloquent as she pointed out that while Hollywood is usually celebrated for the stories they tell through film, but that they instead have become the story themselves this year with so many abuses coming to light.  She left the audience with hope as she spoke about maintaining hope for a brighter morning even during these dark nights as there is indeed a new day on the horizon.
